An outboard engine is a major investment, and the difference between one that lasts a decade and one that fails early often comes down to a handful of simple habits. None of these require a mechanic’s certificate. They just require consistency.

1. Flush After Every Saltwater Trip

Salt is the number one enemy of marine engines. Flushing the cooling passages with fresh water after each outing clears corrosive deposits before they can build up.

2. Change Engine and Lower Unit Oil on Schedule

Manufacturers commonly recommend changing engine and gearcase oils around every 100 hours of use or at least once per season. Fresh oil keeps internal parts lubricated and flushes out contaminants.

3. Replace Fuel Filters and Treat Your Fuel

Clean fuel protects injectors and carburetors. Replace fuel filters regularly and use a quality fuel treatment, especially if the boat sits between trips.

4. Check and Replace Spark Plugs

Worn plugs cause hard starts and rough running. Inspect them periodically and swap them out before they fail on the water.

5. Fight Corrosion Actively

Inspect and replace sacrificial anodes, rinse external metal, and keep electrical connections clean and protected.

6. Inspect the Water Pump Impeller

A failing impeller starves the engine of cooling water. Replacing it on schedule is cheap insurance against an overheated powerhead.

7. Keep a Spare Parts Kit Aboard

Spark plugs, filters, an impeller, and basic seals can turn a ruined weekend into a quick fix. Stock up on genuine replacement parts before you need them.
